Olentangy Braves Little League FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions are listed below. This section will be updated based on the time of the year and any "hot topics" that may need to be addressed for our baseball community. Please check back often as this page will change as needed. If you have specific questions please request an answer by emailing [email protected] and we will respond to your question within 48 hours or will add it to the FAQ's in the future.

IS THERE OR WILL THERE BE AN OLENTANGY BERLIN LITTLE LEAGUE?

No, not currently or in the near future.  The boundary map of our league includes the majority of both Olentangy Berlin and Braves High School Boundaries and there are no rules or requirement to follow school boundaries each time they get redistricted.

WHEN WILL OLENTANGY BRAVES LITTLE LEAGUE NEED TO SPLIT INTO TWO LEAGUES?

All chartered Little Leagues may only have one Major divison.  Also, when a league charters more than 10 teams in its Major division or is required by action of the Charter Committee, it is necessary to form two divisions (usually an American and National Division). Given the current number of teams we have each season in the Major division, we do not see a need to form two divisions or split our league with a separate charter.

REGISTRATION & FEES

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PART OF LITTLE LEAGUE?

Divisions for ages 4-12 are affiliated with Little League International. O.B.L.L. is a part of Ohio District 6. We follow Little League International rules and guidelines. All players who register to play in our organization will be placed on a team. We do not cut players and typically have 25-30 teams serving roughly 400 players.

WHAT DIVISIONS OF PLAY DOES O.B.L.L. OFFER?

We offer playing opportunities for families with players ages 4-12. Divisions are: "Junior" Tee Ball (4-6 yr old), "Senior" Tee Ball (5-6 yr old - coach pitch), "AA" Minor (7-8 yr old - coach pitch), "AAA" Minor (9-10 yr old - player pitch), "Major" (11-12 yr old - player pitch). Our goal is to have a maximum of 12 players per team for ages 4-12 and final roster size is based on interest and the number of coaches available.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS ABOUT EACH DIVISION?

Players will be placed by default into each division by official Little League Age, as determined by the League Age Calculator.

HOW DO I REQUEST FOR MY CHILD TO PLAY UP?

Requests to play up must be submitted to the O.B.L.L. Board of Directors for consideration. For 2019, our new schedule will require us to pay close attention to the number of children playing at all levels. For this reason, all players will be assigned to their age division at registration based on their birthdate. If you want your child to play up to the next age level, you will need to send your request in writing to the O.B.L.L. Board by emailing our Player Agent at [email protected] before March 3, 2019.

Your player must attend evaluations and you will need to include a letter from last year’s coach acknowledging the skill level of the player being appropriate for the next level of play. You may be asked to meet with members of the board, and will be given a decision about your child’s placement after evaluations. We will also base our decision on the number of coaches, teams and players we have at the level you wish to play. If you are granted the ability to play up and the fee increases, we will bill you separately.

HOW DO WE GET REGISTRATION MATERIALS FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON?

Registration is open annually January - March and materials are available on the front page of our website. Registration flyers also are sent home with elementary school students. If you have further questions please contact us at [email protected] We will respond to your question within 48 hours.

I LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE OLENTANGY BRAVES LITTLE LEAGUE BOUNDARY. CAN MY CHILD STILL PLAY O.B.L.L.?

The Olentangy Braves Little League charter includes households who are primarily in the Olentangy Braves and Berlin School Districts. With the recent changes to school boundaries, this is not a hard rule but more of a guideline.

If you're not sure which Little League serves your area, please reference our Boundary Map. If there are any additional questions please contact us at [email protected]

WHAT PAPERWORK IS REQUIRED AND HOW DO I SUBMIT IT?

Each player will need to provide proof of residency or attendance of a school within our league boundaries. The easiest method to do this is via the School Enrollment Form, which can be submitted upon registration or any time until the last Evaluation date, by uploading the document through your profile on the website.

WHAT DO THE REGISTRATION FEES GO TOWARD?

Registration fees go towards the purchase of each player's jersey and hat, baseball field access, equipment needed for field maintenance, insurance, and more.

HOW DO I REQUEST A REFUND?

Parents who cancel registration before registration closes will receive a full refund, minus the card processing fees. Cancellations between registration close and the April 1, 2019 will receive 50 percent refund, minus the card processing fees. There will be no refund for cancellations after the first practice has been held.  If you would like to cancel your registration, please send an email to [email protected].

CAN I PAY FOR REGISTRATION BY CHECK?

We are only accepting online payments for registration at this time.

DO YOU OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS?

We do offer scholarships for discounted registration. You will need to provide proof of free or reduced lunches (the letter you received from the school district is perfect). Contact us at [email protected]

EVALUATIONS & TEAM FORMATION

WHO NEEDS TO ATTEND EVALUATIONS?

Only ''AA'' Minor, ''AAA'' Minor, and Major players need to attend evaluations. Tee Ball players do not need to attend evaluations, unless you are a 6 year old wishing to play up into the ''AA'' Minor division.

WHAT IS EXPECTED AT PLAYER EVALUATIONS AND WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

All ''AA'', ''AAA'', and Major players will be evaluated on their baseball skills during player evaluations. Please visit the website after January 1st for specific tryout times and skills that will be assessed. In general, players will be evaluated on their hitting, throwing/catching, fielding, and running ability.  Please note this is not a tryout as our league will not turn away any players as long as they are eligible per Little League rules.  Each player should bring their glove and bat.  If necessary, all required equipment will be provided for you.

MY CHILD ATTENDED EVALUATIONS LAST YEAR, DO THEY HAVE TO ATTEND EVALUATIONS AGAIN THIS YEAR?

Yes, all ''AA'', ''AAA'', and Major players will be evaluated on their baseball skills during player evaluations every year.

HOW MANY PLAYERS ARE PLACED ON A TEAM?

Our goal each year is to have no more than 12 players on a team at the 4-12 year old level so that we can maximize participation and development opportunities. However all teams are based on the availability of coaches and the appropriate interest levels of players. Some teams may have more or less than 12 players, but our goal is 12.

HOW DO WE MAKE A BUDDY REQUEST?

For "Junior" and "Senior" Tee Ball Divisions, as well as the "AA" Minor Coach Pitch Division, we will consider requests on a case-by-case basis. Please email our Player Agent at [email protected] or enter your request upon registration. Requests are not guaranteed, but will be considered depending on team size and formation. For a request to be considered, a matching request must be reciprocated. We aim to form teams based on which school the child attends, and where possible, where they live.

HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED AT THE 4-8 YR OLD LEVEL?

Players ages 4-6 do not attend evaluations.  Players ages 7-8 participate in an evaluation process, after which the players are placed on teams by the "Junior" Tee Ball, "Senior" Tee Ball, and "AA" Minor Division Commissioners after evaluations are completed. Teams are based on neighborhoods and school locations. Special player and coach requests can be made through registration, but are not guaranteed.

HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED AT THE 9-12 YEAR OLD LEVELS?

Players ages 9-12 participate in an evaluation process, after which coaches select players for their teams in a draft. The goal is to have balanced teams by distributing talent evenly. Twelve-year-olds must play in the Major Division. The balance of the Major Division teams are made up of the top scores in evaluations among 11 and 12-year-olds. The 9 and 10-year-olds play in the "AAA" Minor Division, as that is when they learn to pitch. Anyone interested in "playing up" a division must contact the Player Agent at [email protected] before evaluations (see request deadline on the registration formation) and must have a coach's recommendation. All players that register for our programs are placed on teams regardless of ability as we are open to all interested players and place all players on teams.

WHEN WILL THE TEAMS BE ANNOUNCED FOR THE SPRING SEASON?

Team selection and information will be sent to team managers and coaches before the first practice.

I HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD, CAN THEY PLAY TOGETHER ON THE SAME TEAM?

Player placement into divisions will be based on age. If the players are eligible to play in the same division, there is no rule against them playing together on the same team. However, all team formation procedures will be followed based on the division.

HOW DOES THE TEAM AND/OR LOCAL LEAGUE COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS?

League and team communication will be conducted via email, through the league website, and the GameChanger Team Manager mobile app.

DOES THE LEAGUE HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE?

Yes! The league's Communications Director manages O.B.L.L.'s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts. The league website also has new social media integration capabilities, which is now available on the league home page.

SEASON

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?  HOW MANY PRACTICES AND GAMES PER WEEK?

There will be up to three team events (practice or game) per week.  Practices are usually 90 minutes, games can last up to 2 hours.

HOW LONG IS THE SEASON?

If you're like us, you think about baseball all year! But, the bulk of your commitment to O.B.L.L. will typically be from April through July. Warm ups and evaluations (for all players) are in February, sometimes stretching into early March. Most team practices begin in early April. Games begin for the older ages as early as the first week of May. Younger ages (4/5/6) end before the July 4th holiday, and the rest of the teams are done with games/tournaments by the end of July.

WHEN IS OPENING DAY, AND WHAT WILL BE INVOLVED?

Opening Day is the first Saturday in May.  All teams participate and festivities include a parade, announcement of each team, players, and coaches, as well as a season opening pitch.  Many league sponsors and vendors will also be in attendance.

WHAT TIME AND WHEN ARE THE GAMES HELD?

During the regular season on weeknights for ages 4-8, all games start at 6:00 PM and last no more than 1 hour 30 minutes. For all other ages games could start as early as 6:00 PM on occasion and may end as late as 9:00 PM. All games are played at O.B.L.L. locations, which are listed on our website. All ages will play some games on weekends during the season on Saturdays. Sunday afternoons and weekday evenings may be used for makeup games.

WHEN ARE PRACTICES HELD?

The Scheduling Coordinator and Team Coaches schedule practices. There are typically 1-2 practices per week (max) at the Tee Ball levels. At the Minor and Major division levels there are more games and all practices are conducted at the coaches request with no minimum or maximum requirement. The good news is all practices are at nearby O.B.L.L. locations.

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING TO PRACTICE AND/OR GAMES?

At a minimum, each player should bring their own baseball glove and cleats.  Additional items might include a baseball bat, batting helmet and gloves, and more. The league will provide baseballs, catchers gear, and batting helmets.  Please also make sure as the weather turns warm that your player has plenty of water available to drink in order to stay hydrated.

DOES EACH PLAYER PLAY EVERY GAME?

Yes, each division has minimum play requirements.

VOLUNTEERING

AM I REQUIRED AS A PARENT TO VOLUNTEER?

No, however the entire league is organized and ran exclusively by volunteers.  Each member of the board of directors and every coach has volunteered.  Without volunteers this league will cease to exist.

WHAT DO I DO IF I AM INTERESTED IN COACHING THIS SEASON?

First, thank you for your interest! Coaches are very important in our organization. To proceed, please complete the online coaching application provided on the coaches page on the website and return by the deadline date to receive full consideration. You will be contacted regarding your interest and appointment after player registration closes. All positions are volunteer and require you to complete an online application, background check, proof of certificate of concussion training. You will also be required to attend our coaches training meetings for the level you plan to coach.

COACHES

HOW MANY COACHES ARE THERE ON A TEAM?

Our goal is to have a minimum of three coaches per team at all levels, with most levels requiring four coaches (one Team Manager and two or three assistant coaches). The numbers are dependent on the interest level of our parents and families that are interested in coaching each season. We typically have 35 to 40 teams each season. Coaches represent the largest group of volunteers that are needed to have a successful season. We will do our best to train them properly for success in developing each player. Because of their level of contact with players and families, coaches must pass a criminal background check and mandatory concussion training. They also commit to the principles of the Positive Coaching Alliance.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

WHO IS ON THE BOARD?

The O.B.L.L. Board of Directors comprises a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, safety coordinator, player agents, scheduling coordinators, communication coordinator, volunteer/concessions coordinator and a uniform coordinator. Commissioners for each division are non-voting members of the board. All members are volunteers, typically parents or long-time supporters of O.B.L.L. To see who is serving in each role for the current season, visit the board tab on our homepage.

HOW CAN I JOIN THE BOARD?

We fill open board positions through an election process in October. We welcome anyone who is interested in learning about the board to join an upcoming board meeting, or reach out to the president or vice president. We are always looking for volunteers to assist with special events such as evaluations or our ice cream social. Volunteering is an easy way to get to know the organization and members of the board. Contact us at [email protected] to learn more.

CAN I SIT IN ON A BOARD MEETING?

Yes! Board meetings are normally held the second Monday of each month at Cheshire Elementary School starting at 7 p.m. All meetings are open to the public. If you plan to attend an upcoming board meeting please visit the Board Page on the website as times or dates may be adjusted on occasion.
